As Congressman Coffman campaigns with the GOP Chairman it’s important to remember his hardline record against immigration reform
Today, Rep. Coffman joins RNC Chairman Priebus in pretending he doesn’t have a long record of opposing immigration reform, including saying that the DREAM Act would be a “nightmare” for Americans. Remember, Coffman has called immigration hardliner Tom Tancredo his “hero” and praised Tancredo’s efforts to kill the Republican immigration bill in 2010. This is the same Coffman that questioned President Obama’s birthplace and said the president was in his heart “not an American.”
“Coloradans know Congressman Coffman’s long history of opposing immigrant communities with how he votes and what he says,” said DCCC Communications Director Matt Thornton. “The fact that he would team up with Chairman Priebus, someone who has so publicly failed in his attempt to create a more inclusive Republican Party, is quite fitting for chameleon Coffman.”
Just last week, House Republicans held a hearing questioning birthright citizenship. The Republicans welcomed testimony from Texas Law Professor Gino Graglia – a divisive figure known for his offensive and derogatory statements about minorities. Prior to dressing himself up as reasonable voice on immigration issues, Coffman was an original co-sponsor of 2009 legislation to fundamentally alter birthright citizenship. In 2011, He teamed up with radical anti-immigrant Congressman Steve King (R-IA) to target birthright citizenship again. After Coffman opposed DACA and then said he was for it, the National Council of La Raza publicly questioned his sincerity on immigration reform.
