Chip Roy, Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes Should Condemn Bexar GOP Chair’s Dangerous Remarks

The San Antonio-area GOP chair’s remarks have now been viewed and ridiculed more than 2 million times

On Friday in San Antonio, Bexar County GOP chairwoman Cynthia Brehm falsely claimed coronavirus to be a hoax “promulgated by the Democrats.” In remarks at a political rally, Brehm encouraged Texans to “take off your masks,” before going on to hug her fellow speakers.

The horrifying moment has now been viewed more than 2 million times. Texas Republicans running for Congress in the San Antonio area have an obligation to call out the chairwoman for her dangerous remarks.

“The more than 1,500 deaths and 2 million unemployed in Texas is not a hoax. Republicans like Chip Roy, Tony Gonzales and Raul Reyes have a responsibility to call out this dangerous language from yet another leader in their political party who’s putting lives at risk,” DCCC spokesman Avery Jaffe said.

Congressman Roy has positioned himself as a leading coronavirus skeptic, even calling for “herd immunity” before a COVID-19 vaccine has been developed. Reyes has called for an end to social distancing and insisted that “the numbers are so low and we need to move on,” while Gonzales has continued to ignore public health guidance and travel around the district during the pandemic, touching Texans wherever he goes.
