Chip Roy Votes Against Disaster Relief After Dodging Constituents All Week Long

After failing to hold a single public event in his district on recess, Roy finally voted against the bipartisan disaster relief bill

Over $4 billion in long-overdue disaster relief funds are now on the way to Texas, no thanks to Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21).

Congressman Roy’s obstruction of the bipartisan disaster relief agreement is well known by now, but Chip couldn’t resist one last act of political self-immolation on Monday night: voting against billions in disaster relief for Texas families as over 350 of his colleagues – Democrats and Republicans – rebuked him by voting for it.

Outrage came swiftly for Congressman Roy, with his obstruction dominating headlines across Texas. And after Roy attempted to pen an op-ed explaining his obstruction in the San Antonio Express-News, that same newspaper’s editorial board responded by slamming the congressman’s “tantrum” and utterly dismantling Roy’s political posturing.

“It is difficult to discern any principle at work in Rep. Chip Roy’s single-handed derailing of a $19 billion disaster aid bill last week — even after hearing or reading Roy’s explanation. It still seems like a tantrum to us.”

Ouch.

Facing constituent outrage and terrible headlines across Texas, it’s no wonder Congressman Roy failed to hold a single public event during his 10-day “district work period” in the Texas Hill Country.

“Chip Roy needlessly lengthened the pain and suffering felt by countless people across Texas – all for a political stunt,” DCCC Spokesperson Avery Jaffe said. “In the course becoming the ultimate Washington swamp creature, Congressman Roy is becoming a national embarrassment. His vote against $4 billion in bipartisan disaster relief funds for struggling Texas families is his final act of adding insult to injury.”
