Christian Castelli is a Threat to Reproductive Rights

The Charlotte Observer: The GOP’s position on contraception exposes its abortion hypocrisy

Today, the Charlotte Observer editorial board blasted Republicans for their hypocritical and dangerous position on contraception – they are anti-abortion and anti-contraception. The editorial comes in response to the 203 House Republicans who voted against Rep. Kathy Manning’s Right to Contraception Act.

House Democrats passed Rep. Manning’s bill because Republicans are ripping away health care across the country. Manning’s opponent, extremist Christian Castelli, would have voted right in line with the rest of the MAGA GOP against protecting contraception.

Christian Castelli is a threat to North Carolinans’ reproductive rights. He lists being anti-abortion as one of his core issues, and would push his agenda onto millions of North Carolinian women.

DCCC Spokesperson Monica Robinson:

“Castelli is a danger to the health of North Carolinians and wants to ban abortion. Kathy Manning is a champion of womens’ rights. The choice could not be clearer.”

  • “A logical person might think that politicians who oppose abortion rights would want to do as much as they can to prevent unplanned pregnancies that often lead to abortion. A logical person might also assume that those politicians would support, say, access to contraception, which makes pregnancy far less likely.”

  • “They would be wrong.”

  • “The Right to Contraception Act was introduced by Rep. Kathy Manning, a Democrat from North Carolina. It codifies into federal law the right to obtain and use a wide range of contraceptives, including condoms, the birth control pill, emergency contraceptives and IUDs.”

  • “Abortion is health care, and so is contraception. Some 75% of voters think Congress should codify birth control access, according to a new poll, including 87% of Democrats and 62% of Republicans. That’s an overwhelming consensus, at least outside of Congress.”

  • “Of course, this should not be an either/or situation. All reproductive decisions, from birth control to abortion, are a personal matter, and the law should treat them as such. But to be both anti-abortion and anti-contraception is hypocritical.”
