Timothy Mellon, a top Republican donor called social safety net programs “Slavery Redux” in a self-published autobiography
In today’s news, the Washington Post reported that Timothy Mellon, a top GOP donor who in 2018 contributed $10 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) used racial stereotypes to describe Black Americans in a 2015 self-published autobiography. According to the Post, Mellon wrote that “black people were ‘even more belligerent’ after the expansion of social programs in the 1960s and 1970s and that Americans who rely on government assistance were ‘slaves of a new Master, Uncle Sam.’”
As our nation grapples with systemic racism towards Black Americans and recommits itself to ending systemic racism, the American people deserve to know if Kevin McCarthy and Washington Republicans will speak out against Mellon’s ignorant comments and stop taking his money.
“Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and Washington Republicans owe the American people a clear answer about whether they will disavow Mellon’s hateful rhetoric and stop taking his money,” said DCCC Spokesperson Fabiola Rodriguez. “McCarthy must also answer whether he has ever solicited money from Mellon and if so, whether he will return donations from someone who touts such hateful rhetoric.”
