CNN Report Slams Gimenez and Salazar for Voting Against Climate Resilience Investments

Report shows Gimenez and Salazar’s districts are among the country’s most vulnerable to flooding due to climate change

A new CNN report slams Reps. Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar for voting against needed climate resilience funding for their districts, despite the fact that Florida’s 26th and 27th congressional districts are among the most vulnerable to climate change in the country.

According to a report from a non-profit research group, “88% of the critical infrastructure in Salazar’s congressional district is at risk of failure due to flooding,” the most vulnerable in the country, while the district Carlos Gimenez represents comes in at 69%.

CNN called out Gimenez and Salazar for paying lip service to fighting climate change, saying their “voting record…does not match [their] rhetoric.” Indeed, both Gimenez and Salazar have made it a habit of standing in the way of climate change legislation during their time in Congress.

Both voted against the Build Back Better bill, which contains the largest investments to address climate change in history, and voted against the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan, supported by some of their own Republican colleagues. In July, they also voted against bipartisan legislation to improve drinking water standards.

“Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar have completely failed South Floridians on climate and are wasting time as we approach greater challenges,” said DCCC Spokesperson Abel Iraola. “Gimenez and Salazar have failed to protect South Florida’s most precious natural resources, including the Everglades, Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys. They continue to sit back and do nothing as even some of their Republican colleagues vote for Democratic legislation to mitigate climate change.”
