Committed to Gutting Social Security and Medicare, Republicans Vow to Play Politics with Full Faith and Credit of the United States

House Republicans have made their positions clear:

  • They want to gut Social Security and Medicare by either raising the eligibility age or sunsetting these programs altogether.

  • They are willing to play politics with the full faith and credit of the United States by voting against necessary debt ceiling increases and against funding the government.

Now, in the final month of an election cycle, Republicans are reportedly planning to use their willingness to play politics with Americans’ livelihoods to leverage their desire to gut the retirement benefits seniors have earned. If Republicans were to stop government funding or fail to raise the debt ceiling, millions of jobs could be lost, unemployment would surge, and military servicemembers’ paychecks could be jeopardized. If Republicans were successful in their efforts to change or gut Social Security and Medicare, medical bills could soar and seniors could have their benefits delayed or even halted altogether under some of the proposed Republican plans.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“After promising to ban abortion nationwide, Republicans just upped the stakes of the midterm elections yet again by making clear their plans to use reckless debt ceiling threats to finally achieve their goal of gutting Social Security and Medicare. If Republicans wanted to take credit for lowering the deficit, they should’ve voted for the numerous Democratic bills that improved people’s lives while lowering the deficit by nearly $1.5 trillion.”
