Congrats, Danny Tarkanian: You Played Yourself

Area Man Successfully Reintroduces His Negatives to Voters, Without a Dime from Democrats

Taking the political ‘self-own’ genre to dizzying new heights, Danny Tarkanian and his campaign yesterday successfully reintroduced his history of shady business dealings – his involvement with telemarketing schemes and fraudulent charities that ended up preying on the elderly and the taxpayer bailout for his failed $16 million ‘equestrian resort’ – to the voters of Southern Nevada, all on his own, through a poorly-conceived press stunt. The claims were previously made by two Republicans – Senator Dean Heller and State Senator Scott Hammond – neither of whom Tarkanian has threatened to sue. Also on the list of other notable Republicans who have made the assertion that Danny Tarkanian was involved with the companies that made these telemarketing scams: Danny Tarkanian.

In a sign of just how poorly thought out Mr. Tarkanian’s ruse yesterday was, the news report itself acknowledged the telemarketing scam claim against him as fact. DCCC spokesperson Drew Godinich released the following statement:

“Danny Tarkanian himself has acknowledged that he worked for telemarketing companies that preyed on the elderly. The only news here is that Danny Tarkanian thinks that reigniting a conversation on his history of shady business dealings in the press and with voters is a win for his campaign. His garage full of campaign lawn signs from his prior failed campaigns suggests that it’s not.”

Tarkanian to Lee: ‘Cease-and desist’ campaign claims

It is not every day one candidate marches into his opponent’s campaign headquarters, but that is what Republican Danny Tarkanian did, Monday morning, cease and desist letter in hand.

His destination was the southwest Las Vegas headquarters for Democrat Susie Lee. The two are battling to represent Congressional District 3, which is the southern chunk of Clark County.

“We are gonna make sure she takes it down and we’re gonna hold her accountable for it,” Tarkanian told me after he emerged from Lee HQ.

What “it” is are accusations Tarkanian says Lee is making in press releases, on Twitter, and on a website, referring to a telemarketing company he helped set up that preyed on the elderly. Years ago, as an attorney, Tarkanian helped some companies incorporate, which were later convicted of telemarketing fraud.

“What she cannot do is make a factually dishonest statement that she knows is a lie that impugns my character – that’s what defamation is,” Tarkanian says.

He is also upset with the Lee Campaign’s claim that he received a “$16 million taxpayer bailout for a failed ‘equestrian destination resort’ in California.” The claim refers to an eventual bankruptcy filing Tarkanian made. “Taxpayers were held harmless for these debts, as all banks that lent Mr. Tarkanian money related to the failed business venture were FDIC-insured,” Randazza writes. “It is fundamentally false and misleading to state that Mr. Tarkanian’s bankruptcy cost taxpayers a dime, much less $16 million.”

Monday afternoon, the Lee Campaign showed no sign of backing down.

“Danny Tarkanian’s history of helping to set up telemarketing companies that preyed on the elderly is well-documented, as are his suspect business dealings and bailout,” said Lee campaign manager Brandon Cox in an email to News 3.

“Furthermore, these concerns about Tarkanian’s record have been raised by Republicans like Senator Dean Heller and State Senator Scott Hammond, neither of whom Tarkanian has sued. This is a desperate, partisan attempt to muddy the waters by a sore loser and perennial candidate who has run six unsuccessful political campaigns in a row. Nevada voters deserve a real debate about the issues, not publicity stunts and bogus lawsuits,” Cox says.
