Congressman Ben Ray Luján Becomes the Highest-Ranking Latino in the House of Representatives

This week, Congressman Ben Ray Luján was elected unanimously by the House Democratic Caucus to once again lead the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) for the 2018 cycle. As DCCC Chair, Luján will be the highest-ranking Latino in the House of Representatives in the upcoming 115th Congress.

The election of diverse people like Luján to Democratic leadership posts comes at a critical time for the party.

The 115th Congress will be the most diverse Congress in our nation’s history. Under Congressman Luján’s leadership, the DCCC’s Red to Blue program, which includes the most competitive races across the country, had a record-breaking number of diverse candidates. The DCCC was also one of the most diverse committees during the 2016 cycle and was the first committee to voluntarily release its staff diversity numbers.

The Congressman was raised and still resides in a rural farming community in northern New Mexico where his family spans multiple generations.

“It’s a great honor and privilege to continue fighting for nuestras familias and work as the DCCC Chairman to ensure the United States Congress reflects our nation’s diversity,” said DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján. “Over the next two years, we are going to reach out to working families across America, from California’s Central Valley, to Miami to Des Moines, in order to organize and build on the progress we’ve made. Democrats are fighting every day because Americans deserve champions that will look out for their best interests, whether it’s good paying jobs, access to healthcare, and keeping our communities safe.”
