Congressman Buchanan Continues His Attacks On Unemployed Floridians

In case you missed it, today Politico reported that Floridians facing record-breaking levels of unemployment have run headlong into an unemployment insurance system utterly dismantled by Florida Republicans over the past decade.

And this report comes just one week after Florida Republicans, including Congressman Vern Buchanan, stayed silent while members of their own tried to cut coverage in the stimulus package.

But Buchanan’s silence comes as no shock for Floridians because back in 2016, the Congressman stated he was “so impressed” by the arcane and draconian cuts made by then-Governor Rick Scott in a hearing.

In fact Buchanan heralded Scott’s ability to lower the unemployment rate, even though according to one Florida Republican, it wasn’t so much that unemployment got lower, just that the cuts made it “harder for people to get benefits or keep benefits so that the unemployment numbers were low to give the governor something to brag about.”

DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer released the following statement:

“Congressman Buchanan must explain to his constituents why he was ‘so impressed’ with a system that is actively keeping Floridians from getting the help and resources they need during this pandemic. He also owes an apology to every Floridian struggling to access a broken system he personally actively supported and propped up while in Congress.”
