Congressman Schweikert Pushes Drug Company Talking Points Against Bill to Lower Prescription Drug Costs

Schweikert has taken over $30,000 in contributions from drug companies who stand to lose from the bill

In October, Congressman David Schweikert used his spot on the Ways and Means Committee to vote against the “Elijah Eugene Cummings Lower Drug Prices Now Act” (H.R. 3) — legislation that would lower the cost of prescription drugs for families. Specifically, the bill gives Medicare the power to negotiate with drug companies for lower prescription drug prices and reverse unjustified price gouging on thousands of medications like insulin.

Now, as the full House prepares to vote on the legislation, Congressman Schweikert is parroting the talking points being pushed by his drug manufacturer backers. The truth is, the bill would lower domestic drug prices and save at least $345 billion for the American people. This legislation will save a family of four approximately $1,920 per year, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. In AZ-06 specifically, there are 111,400 people enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan and 547,300 people enrolled in private health insurance – all of whom would benefit from the passage of this legislation.

“Seniors and working people need relief from out of control prescription drug costs, but Congressman Schweikert has chosen to put the powerful drug companies who bankroll his campaign over hardworking families in Arizona’s 6th District,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.

Time and again, Arizonans say that lowering the cost of prescription drugs is a top priority and the contrast between the different priorities of Schweikert and the hardworking families he represents couldn’t be clearer.
