| As the American people’s approval of Republicans continues to crater, House Democrats’ path to the majority is clearer than ever. Today, Cook Political Report shifted five races toward Democrats, including Republican held PA-08 (Lean Republican to Toss Up) and FL-27 (Solid Republican to Likely Republican). The non-partisan race rater notes these shifts “reflect […] Republicans’ broader midterm struggles as well as specific developments in each race.”
Cook Political Report’s Erin Covey writes:
“The political environment for House Republicans continues to look bleak. Even before President Donald Trump’s approval rating reached a nadir amid spiking gas prices and an unpopular war with Iran, special and off-year elections showed Democrats with a significant enthusiasm advantage and Republicans were trailing the national generic ballot by five to six points.
…
“The battleground lines are coming into focus as Republicans defend their tenuous hold on the House. The number of truly competitive districts remains relatively small: With these latest changes, 18 Republicans sit in races rated Toss Up, Lean Republican, and Lean Democrat, compared to 16 Democrats in these categories. But of those Republicans, 14 are in Toss Up, giving Democrats plenty of opportunities to flip the three seats they need for a majority next year.”
DCCC Spokesperson Bridget Gonzalez:
“These ratings shifts are a reflection of this disastrous Republican-led Congress. The American people are tired of Republicans’ broken promises, and they will deliver the majority for House Democrats come November.” |
