Cook Political Report: GOP has “incredibly tenuous hold” on the House

“If history repeats itself, voters will be looking for an opportunity to put a check on the party in power next November.”

The political winds are turning against House Republicans, as Cook Political Report’s first 2026 House Race Ratings make clear. Democrats only need to net three seats to win back the House in 2026, and with Republicans’ corruption already risking making life more expensive, we’ll have plenty of opportunities to show voters that only Democrats care about delivering For the People.

From Cook Political Report:

Republicans have an incredibly tenuous hold on the House, and Democrats will only need to pick up three seats to secure a majority in 2026. If history repeats itself, voters will be looking for an opportunity to put a check on the party in power next November.

[Republicans] face a government funding fight over the next month, and will then attempt to pass border security and tax bills through a fraught reconciliation process — providing plenty of opportunities for backlash from voters.

Many of [Democrats’] House candidates in competitive districts managed to run ahead of former Vice President Kamala Harris, while Republican House candidates largely ran behind Trump […and] It’s still an open question how many Republican candidates can replicate Trump’s victories.

[Republicans] are likely to face a more difficult political environment this time around.”

DCCC Communications Director Courtney Rice:

“Voters will hold House Republicans accountable for failing to lower costs while fostering a culture of corruption that benefits their billionaire backers. The political environment is in Democrats’ favor heading into 2026 – and with stellar candidates who are focused on delivering for their districts, House Democrats are poised to take back the majority in 2026.”
