Cuban American Congressman Retires from Congress, Calling Trump “A Cancer” and Slamming the Direction of the Republican Party

Do supposed champions of democracy Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar agree with their colleague’s clear-eyed views and warnings about today’s GOP or will they continue sycophantically cowing to Trump?

Last night, former rising Republican star Rep. Anthony Gonzalez announced his retirement from Congress, calling Trump a “cancer for the country.”

Gonzalez lamented that Republicans “learned the wrong lessons” from the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection, adding that having Trump continue to serve as the centerpiece of the party “is horribly irresponsible and destructive for the country.”

Gonzalez’s honest take on the growing extremism and cult of personality in the Republican Party stands in stark contrast to the actions of his Cuban American colleagues in South Florida, who have instead chosen to embrace disinformation about the 2020 election.

In January, after the United States Capitol was breached, Carlos Gimenez voted twice to decertify the election and invalidate millions of legitimate votes, fueling Trump’s Big Lie. Since then, both he and Salazar have continued to pay lip service to the ex-president who incited a historic and violent insurrection.

“Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar pretend to be champions of democracy abroad but have nothing to show for it here at home,” said DCCC spokesperson Abel Iraola. “When given the chance, they’ve sided with Trump and helped spread disinformation into our communities for political benefit. It’s a shame that we can’t count on them to have the same integrity and commitment to democracy as their Republican colleague Anthony Gonzalez.”
