No one is safe under President Trump’s Administration, and yesterday Homeland Security John Kelly reaffirmed this notion when he told House Democrats that DACA was in “serious jeopardy.” Representative Carlos Curbelo likes to claim that he supports DREAMers, but even after the news broke yesterday, Curbelo has yet to comment. Actions speak louder than words, and Curbelo hasn’t put out so much as a Tweet on an issue he claims to care deeply about.
Let’s take a look at Curbelo’s actions. Since being elected in a heavily-Democratic district, Curbelo has made it his goal to express his support for DACA, even to the point of creating a Leadership PAC to support his fellow Republicans willing to pass comprehensive immigration reform (SPOILER ALERT: this is a sham PAC that gives money to anti-immigration and anti-DACA Republicans, breaking its central promise):
“The PAC, named What a Country (WACPAC), has given money to at least 47 House Republicans since the start of 2015, Federal Election Commission records show. Over half of them voted against continuing to fund Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)” [Miami Herald, 6/27/16]
“Congressman Curbelo’s empty promises of fighting for DREAMers and their families mean absolutely nothing when President Trump’s Administration continues to expand its cruel and heartless mass deportation force,” said Javier Gamboa of the DCCC. “House Republicans are in the majority and have made it clear that they would rather follow President Trump’s anti-immigrant lead than to do what’s right for our country. The midterms will give South Florida voters an opportunity to replace Curbelo with a real leader that will stand up to Trump’s dangerous agenda and will pass comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship.”
