Curbelo Supported Lawsuit That Laid Groundwork for Historic Anti-Immigrant Attack

When Carlos Curbelo supported a House lawsuit against DACA/DAPA, he gave credence to the anti-immigrant fervor of his party, laying the groundwork for today’s rare, historic vote to send an amicus brief on behalf of the House of Representatives to the Supreme Court against President Obama’s immigration actions. In the past, he’s even supported sending back children of undocumented immigrants.

With his district becoming more Democratic and Donald Trump poised to become the Republican nominee, Curbelo is singing a different tune these days. However, there is no denial that Curbelo failed to stand up for South Floridians when Congress took its first steps toward this rare and historic attack against immigrant families.

Carlos Curbelo may try to separate himself from Donald Trump in the eyes of South Floridians, but today’s vote was made possible in part by Curbelo’s refusal to stand up to the anti-immigrant movement in his party when it mattered,” said DCCC Spokesman Jermaine House. “Hardworking immigrant families in South Florida deserve a Member of Congress who will fight for them when it matters most, not just when it’s convenient.”

Today’s vote concerns President Obama’s immigration orders: an extension to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) for eligible children who had been brought to the United States through no fault of their own, and the new Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), which shields eligible immigrant parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents from deportation and grants them with temporary work permits. It is estimated that unfreezing DAPA and expanded DACA would result in tens of billions of dollars in economic growth.
