Endangered House Republican Reaches A New Level Of Bizarre And Out Of Touch
Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo is no stranger to controversy when it comes to Donald Trump. Months ago, Curbelo received widespread national attention for pushing his wacky conspiracy theory that Trump was actually a Democratic plant. Curbelo never disavowed that theory, but he reached a new level of bizarre yesterday when he went on national television to defend his party boss, Speaker Paul Ryan, for temporarily postponing his promised endorsement of Trump.
Curbelo’s defense of Speaker Ryan was especially bizarre, though, because he praised Ryan for being skeptical that Donald Trump was conservative enough.
“I think this meeting with Speaker Ryan is very important, by the way, I commend the Speaker. Some people have said that he should have quietly falling in line but that’s not what leaders do. Leaders discern, leaders try to get to the truth and try to really create a situation where they can inspire trust and confidence. So what the Speaker is trying to do is ascertain who is Donald Trump, what does he stand for, what’s his agenda and his vision for the future of the country. So I think this meeting might actually produce something worthwhile worth paying attention to. Chuck, we have a lot of respected conservative people like George, like Bill Crystal like Glenn Beck who wondered out loud if there are two New York liberals at the top of the ticket in November and I think Speaker Ryan he obviously has some real concerns and I commend him for having the courage to say no, I’m not going to fall in line, I’m going to do what’s right for this institution, for the American people, and try to figure out what the differences are between Mrs. Clinton, Secretary Clinton and Mr. Trump.”
That’s right. A Republican Congressman in one of the most competitive districts in the country praised party bosses who question whether or not Donald Trump is sufficiently conservative to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.
“Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo showed South Florida voters just how out of touch he really is when he praised Speaker Ryan for questioning whether or not Donald Trump was conservative enough to support,” said Jermaine House of the DCCC. “Any Republican who doesn’t think Donald Trump is radical enough to be the party’s nominee is too extreme for South Florida, and voters will hold Carlos Curbelo accountable for placing himself in that camp.”
