Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced on Tuesday that adding 275 new police officers is a top priority in the city’s new budget, made possible thanks to funding provided by the American Rescue Plan. That would be the same American Rescue Plan that Rep. Beth Van Duyne voted against.
The American Rescue Plan received broad, bipartisan support from voters and local officials in TX-24 — including both Mayor Johnson and Fort Worth’s Republican mayor, Betsy Price. In March, the two mayors penned a joint op-ed in the Star-Telegram praising the Rescue Plan, writing that “These much-needed resources will be a huge boost and will help the robust Dallas-Fort Worth economy rebound much faster — while also lifting up the most vulnerable.”
Their calls went unheeded when Van Duyne, true to form, put party politics over people and voted no. Fortunately, Democrats in Congress didn’t need Van Duyne’s vote to deliver for the people of TX-24. No thanks to her, the City of Dallas has the resources to hire new officers, make critical improvements to the 911 call center, and invest in overall community safety.
“Thanks to Democrats in Congress, the City of Dallas has the resources it needs to invest in public safety and create new law enforcement jobs,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Just don’t thank Beth Van Duyne and her vote against the American Rescue Plan.”
