Today, in response to the Supreme Court’s demonstrated willingness to throw away precedent and Justice Clarence Thomas’ threat to overturn Americans’ right to marry whomever they love, the House passed the Respect for Marriage Act. This bill – now headed to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law – protects marriage equality and ensures legal same-sex and interracial marriages are recognized. David Schweikert voted NO.
This isn’t the first time Schweikert voted against protecting individual liberties and preventing discrimination. In July, Schweikert voted against the Respect for Marriage Act for the first time. And in February, Schweikert voted against the Equality Act, legislation that would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation.
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Schweikert’s vote signals he wants an individual’s right to marry who they love to be ripped away. Whether choosing not to protect abortion rights or same-sex and interracial marriage, Schweikert is showing Arizonans that he is a threat to their rights.”
