David Schweikert Votes to Potentially Shield Self from Ethics Investigations

Yesterday, Rep. David Schweikert voted in favor of House Republicans’ rule changes that would gut the Office of Congressional Ethics, which is intended to be a nonpartisan, independent body charged with reviewing allegations of misconduct against House lawmakers and staff.

This comes at a time when David Schweikert has been under investigation for his own misconduct and shady finance violations.

REMINDER: In February, the Federal Election Commission fined Schweikert $125,000 for knowingly and willfully using campaign funds for personal use. This is on top of the laundry list of ethics violations swirling around Schweikert, including a prior $50,000 House Ethics Committee violation fee for personal use of campaign funds and improper spending by his official office.

In 2017, House Republicans, which included David Schweikert, similarly used the rules package to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“David Schweikert is a corrupt politician out for himself. Rather than allow the Office of Congressional Ethics to continue its tradition of holding both parties accountable as a nonpartisan and independent body, David Schweikert voted to protect himself from future investigations.”
