| A new POLITICO report highlights a growing political problem for David Valadao: Central Valley families are feeling pain at the pump, and voters increasingly blame his war-of-choice in Iran and reckless economic agenda as they head into November.
46 percent say rising gas prices “will impact how they plan to vote,” and 57 percent cite the cost of living as worse than they “can ever remember it being.” Even 49 percent of Republicans are reconsidering their vote based on gas prices.
That spells warning signs for David Valadao, who has supported the war, downplayed its effects, and broken his campaign promise to lower the cost of gas.
POLITICO: In CA-22, Valadao “will have to answer for the…cost pressures of rising gas prices”:
- In California’s 22nd District…average prices across the district had gone up $1.17 by early July — the third highest increase of any district, according to POLITICO’s analysis.
- [Randy] Villegas said in an interview that he thought frustration over gas prices would mobilize turnout in the fall, driven by how the cost of gas is “tied to every other thing.”
- “It’s the cost of gas when you’re driving to the grocery store, when you’re driving to…see a doctor…[or the cost of gas when driving 7 to 8 hours away to] get cheaper health care.”
- Valadao did not respond to requests for comment.
DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“David Valadao doesn’t want to talk about skyrocketing prices because every trip to the gas pump, grocery store, or pharmacy reminds Central Valley families that he broke his promise to lower their costs. The Valley is paying the price now – but it will be Valadao that pays the price in November.”
