DCCC and California Democratic Party Move To Intervene Against Republican Voter Suppression Lawsuits In California

Democrats Seek To Intervene Against Republican Efforts To Block Vote By Mail

Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the California Democratic Party moved to intervene in two Republican lawsuits that would block California from implementing a primarily vote-by-mail November 2020 general election. California’s move to a primarily vote-by-mail election will ensure more Americans can vote safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Republican lawsuits fly in the face of crucial safety concerns during COVID-19 and are part of a national Republican strategy to limit voters’ access to the ballot.

“No one should have to risk their life to make their voice heard in our democracy. These Republican lawsuits are a shameful attempt to put a stumbling block in the way of Californians’ ability to make their voices heard,” DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos said. “We will not let Republicans use a pandemic as a way to suppress Americans’ votes.”

“Californians are rightly worried about the health and safety of their families and we are working to ensure they can vote without putting themselves in danger,” said California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks. “It is frankly unconscionable that Republicans in Washington are suing to make casting a ballot more dangerous in our state and I am proud that Democrats are stepping in to put an end to this reckless nonsense.”

The DCCC and California Democratic Party brief argues that California’s “decision to implement a primarily all-mail system for the Election is not only reasonable, but constitutionally required to ensure that all eligible California voters can safely exercise their franchise in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.”
