DCCC Chair DelBene: “We are seeing the American public sour on the Republicans’ disastrous record of broken promises – and it’s why voters will reject them in the midterms.”
Yesterday, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene held a press conference with House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to recap and provide analysis of this week’s Democratic victories in New Jersey, Virginia, and California – specifically laying out how the massive turnout by voters and decisive wins for Democrats coast to coast foreshadow the DCCC’s work to retake the House Majority in 2026.
Chair DelBene’s prepared remarks as given:
“Yesterday – from coast to coast – voters sent a resounding message that they reject the Republican agenda that is raising costs on everything – from groceries, to health care, to utilities. – and their efforts to blatantly rig the system to stay in power.
“Voters in California stood up and rejected the extreme Republican attempts to rig the midterm elections and deny them their representation in Congress.
“California was significant because it showed that voters won’t let Republicans cheat their way to a win.
“The passage of Proposition 50 is a victory for free and fair elections.
“It proved that the public understands what’s at stake and that Democrats are fighting to level the playing field and respond to the outrageous and un-American attempt by Republicans to rig the election.
“The Prop. 50 vote also sends a message that while we didn’t ask for this fight, Democrats and the American people are ready and willing to fight back against this Republican scheme.
“Whether it’s California, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois or other states, we’re prepared to fight back on every possible front, every step of the way.
“Last night’s results also affirmed that what we’ve been building here at the DCCC all year is the right recipe to win in 2026.
“In Virginia and New Jersey, voters overwhelmingly rejected the Republican vision that puts the wealthy and well-connected over the needs of everyday families.
“It’s a testament to the quality of candidates like Mikie and Abigail – former colleagues and now soon-to-be governors. They’re both former Red to Blue candidates who flipped their seats in 2018 and Frontline House members.
“For the midterms, we’re recruiting the same type of candidates this cycle. House Democrats are running incredible patriots all over the country who are raising their hands to serve their communities.
“They come from different backgrounds, different walks of life – but they are all united in their shared, singular passion to fight for their communities, make a difference, and work to lower costs and improve the lives of working families.
“And they’re ready to work hard.
“We know we cannot take anything for granted and our candidates are out there right now working hard to earn every vote.
“Meanwhile, the Republican field is only focused on how they can bend the knee to Donald Trump and rubber stamp his disastrous policies.
“I say this a lot, but I say it all the time because it’s true – our great candidates are the difference in our mission to re-take the majority.
“Great candidates actually take the time to listen to their communities.
“If Republicans were actually listening to their communities, they would know that people are hurting, struggling – all because of their reckless agenda and harmful policies.
“House Republicans are wrecking our economy. People are struggling day-to-day and they are personally feeling how bad the economy has gotten under the Republican trifecta.
“Groceries, utility bills, housing, health care – everything is getting more expensive – because of House Republicans.
“Trump and House Republicans promised on ‘Day One’ to lower costs. They’ve broken that promise – and it’s going to cost them the House Majority.
“All year, we’ve been saying that Republicans are running scared. Last night showed us why.
“By every metric possible – we are seeing the American public sour on the Republicans’ disastrous record of broken promises – and it’s why voters will reject them in the midterms.
“In short, House Democrats have the better message, stronger candidates, more resources, and as we all saw last night, a favorable political environment as we go into the midterms.”
