DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day:
“On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the more than 570 federally recognized Tribal Nations and the Native communities whose histories, languages, and traditions are woven into the fabric of our country.
“From industry and technology to art and public service, Native and Indigenous trailblazers have contributed to and enhanced the character of our nation. Today, they continue to shape our future, and their leadership strengthens our democracy — which is always stronger when every voice is heard.
“Remembering our shared history must be comprehensive and we can never forget the injustice, violence, and displacement against Native communities and tribal nations. It sits heavy in our history books and upon our collective conscience.
“Far too many communities are struggling after Republicans attacked rural hospitals and made devastating cuts to tribal programs. House Democrats are fighting to restore these cuts and lower costs to build an economy that works for everyone, and we will always support Tribal Nations’ right to self governance. This month, we celebrate the resilience, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples and commit to preserve their heritage.”
