DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day:
“On Indigenous Peoples’ day, we celebrate the vast contributions made by Indigenous communities throughout our nation’s history – in public service, the arts, agriculture, medicine, and countless other fields over the years. This day is also an opportunity for us to recommit to honoring tribal sovereignty and self-determination, supporting the Tribal Nations so that they may continue to thrive today and into the future.
“Celebrating this day is an important part of how we acknowledge the long history of injustice, violence and displacement against Native communities and Tribal nations. Remembering this difficult history reminds us how much more work we must do to create a more inclusive society. House Democrats understand that the federal government has an obligation to empower and invest in Indigenous communities and support Tribal Nations’ right of self governance.
“So today let us all work together to get us closer to our nation’s ideal of a fully inclusive society with shared prosperity, where everyone has their rights, liberties, and freedoms protected and a fair chance to succeed.”
