DCCC Chair Statement on Maryland Legislature Sending a Constitutional Amendment to Voters

Following the Maryland legislature’s passage of a constitutional amendment that would, once approved by voters in November, allow the legislature to counter the gerrymandering onslaught by national Republicans, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement:

“Democrats did not start – nor did we ask for – this mid-decade redistricting fight. But we will finish it.

“The decision by the Maryland legislature to ask the voters to weigh in stands in stark contrast to Republican attempts to rig our nation’s elections. Republicans have forced through gerrymandering schemes – often in the dead of the night – without input from the people, because they know voters hate this. In every state we’ve responded, we’ve gone to the people.

“I applaud Governor Moore and Maryland lawmakers for taking this responsible, responsive, and people-first action to fight back against Republicans’ corrupt power grab.

“There is too much at stake to not fight back. And that’s exactly what Maryland is doing. The DCCC is ready to fight anywhere to take back the majority so that the People’s House will again prioritize the people.”
