Today, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement in recognition of the anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act:
“The Voting Rights Act (VRA) was a major milestone on our nation’s journey to deliver on the promise of a government of the people, by the people, for the people. It was the culmination of years of work and sacrifice by tens of thousands of brave Americans striving to guarantee the right of Black voters’ access to the ballot box, simultaneously empowering all Americans with the right to vote, regardless of race, religion, color, or creed.
“For six decades, the VRA has been a foundational safeguard to protect this precious right for every American. But today it, and our democracy itself, is under attack.
“This assault on our democracy includes, but is not limited to, a scheme by Donald Trump and Republicans to gerrymander the Texas congressional map, further suppressing the vote of millions of minority voters in Texas, all to ultimately rig the midterm election.
“House Democrats will always fight to defend the right to vote and for all Americans to have fair and equal representation. When we take back the majority, we will again pass legislation such as the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act that will strengthen the VRA for the next 60 years and more.”
