DCCC Chair Statement on the Anniversary of the Equal Pay Act

On the anniversary of the 1963 signing of the Equal Pay Act, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement:

“Too many women throughout our history have received lower wages for the same work as their male counterparts. It’s unjust, it’s un-American, and it creates a roadblock on the way towards our shared goal of equality for all under the law.

“The Equal Pay Act was a major step towards gender equity in the workplace — establishing once and for all that equal pay for equal work should be both a matter of principle and of law. But it’s also more than just an economic or social regulation, it is, in President Kennedy’s words, ‘basic to democracy.’

“House Democrats are fighting to make it easier for Americans to earn higher wages and to lower costs on everyday essentials, and we’re taking on House Republicans who not only seek to reverse legal protections for women, but are working to control our lives everywhere from the workplace to the doctor’s office.

“The choice between pursuing an ambitious career and a family life has always been a false choice, and we must do more to offer families the resources they need to follow the path they chose. This anniversary is a reminder of the progress we’ve made and the challenges still ahead.”
