DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene: Republicans “know they can’t win in the hearts and minds of the American voters, so they want to rig the system, and we are going to fight back.”
DelBene calls Republicans’ decision to cut off food assistance to 42 million American people the latest example of Republican’s neverending efforts to be “cruel to the American people”
DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene appeared on MSNBC’s “Way Too Early” and “CNN This Morning” today, blasting Republicans for their cruel efforts to cut off food assistance from millions of Americans and trying to rig the midterm election.
DelBene called out House Republicans for their failure to lower prices and noted that the American public is ready for a Democratic House Majority that will focus on improving the lives of working families. DelBene also made the case that while Democrats are here in town and ready to get to work, the American people know that it’s House Republicans who bear responsibility for the government shutdown and rising health care costs because of their refusal to come to work and do their jobs.
On Rising Costs While Republicans Refuse to Come to Work
“The administration has been looking for ways to be cruel to the American people, over and over, and this is yet another decision to do that. There is money – $6 billion – that is there, that can be used in this purpose. That’s why that money is there. And yet they are making a conscious decision not to use that money, just to inflict pain on 42 million people across the country. And Republicans have tried to gut SNAP in their Big, Ugly Bill. […] It’s a huge, huge issue for us, and I think it’s important that folks are holding the administration accountable here.

“House Republicans aren’t even in town. We haven’t been in session for over a month. There’s no reason for that. Folks should be at the table, doing everything we can to make sure that we are doing the work for the American people. And we have open enrollment starting on November 1. That’s this weekend, where folks are going to see their premiums skyrocketing on health care. There should be a huge sense of urgency. It’s terrible that House Republicans have no sense of urgency about that.

“I think Republicans are blamed for not leading. They are absolutely blamed for – they’ve caused the shutdown. They’re blamed for policies that are hurting the American people. Prices are going up across the country. Folks wanted to see prices come down. This number one issue for people across the country is rising costs, and Republicans have been raising costs on American families, between tariffs, their Big, Ugly Bill, all have been hurting families of the grocery store, housing costs, energy costs – and now health care costs going up dramatically, all because of actions they’ve taken.
On Republican Efforts to Rig the Election “[Republicans] started down this path in Texas. It wasn’t because the people of Texas said, “We want new maps.” Donald Trump said, “give me five seats.” And Texas Republicans said, “Yes, sir.” And so absolutely, are we going to respond? Yes, we are responding. But look, in California, it’s going to the voters. The voters are going to decide. And voters understand that this is a temporary response to what they see Republicans doing […] in Texas. But they’re trying to do it, as you said, in Missouri and Indiana, North Carolina, over and over and over again. They know they can’t win in the hearts and minds of the American voters, so they want to rig the system. And we are going to fight back, and we’re going to use every tool we can to do that.”
“We should make sure that we are fighting for fair maps across the country, and we’re going to fight back against what Republicans are trying to do to gerrymander. We also have great candidates running across the country. Great folks like Don Davis who represent purple districts across the country who are focused on the pocketbook issues that people care about. Rising costs being number one, Republicans promised to lower costs on day one. Every action they’ve taken has raised costs for American families.

“We absolutely need to put policy in place that helps working families across the country. That means making sure we protect health care, making sure that we lower costs for American families, making sure we re-open the government. We can do all of that, but Republicans, House Republicans, aren’t even here.

“It’s very clear: Republicans aren’t even in town. House Democrats are here, ready to get to work, standing up and fighting to lower costs for American families and fighting to make sure that we reopen the government and have health care.”
