“As we celebrate the start of Black History Month, 100-years after Dr. Carter G. Woodson first launched Negro History Week, we recognize the extraordinary achievements of Black Americans across every corner of our country. From leaders like Shirley Chisholm and John Lewis to August Wilson and Aretha Franklin, the legacy of Black America can be found in the lessons we teach, the songs we sing, and the stories we tell.
“That extraordinary legacy serves as a call to action. Black Americans have fought relentlessly for justice and equality across all aspects of American life. While Republicans deploy dangerous attacks on our civil liberties, House Democrats are fighting to protect democracy and the voting rights that generations of Black Americans fought to secure. Republicans are busy trying to rig our elections while ignoring the struggles of hardworking families because they want to put their billionaire donors ahead of everyday Americans.
“During Black History Month, House Democrats are committed to continuing that fight for justice on behalf of the leaders who today carry that legacy. We must see American progress not as an inevitability, but as the result of generations of work uplifting our founding promise of liberty and justice for all.”
