DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene Statement Celebrating Pride Month

DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement celebrating the beginning of Pride Month:

“As we welcome the start of Pride Month, we celebrate the love, dignity, and humanity of LGBTQ+ Americans, and honor the courageous sacrifice of those who put their lives on the line for true equality, fighting for the freedom to live and love openly.

“Pride is not just a celebration. It is a reminder of what is at stake. This month, we remember the protesters brutalized at Stonewall Inn for having the courage to stand up for equality. We honor the hundreds of thousands of our neighbors who died during the AIDS crisis, whose cries were met by far too many in power at the time with indifference and judgment. And we remember the examples of Marsha P. Johnson and Matthew Shepard, whose legacies live on in our memories and in the movements they left behind. To every LGBTQ+ American: you are seen, you are valued, and you have allies in this fight.

“While we’ve won extraordinary victories in recent years, we know that there is still work to be done. Our late colleague, Barney Frank, said, ‘Government is simply the name we give to the things we choose to do together.’ Let us follow his example and march on as one towards a more perfect and equal union.

“House Democrats are proud to stand alongside our LGBTQ+ community, and we’ll continue to champion equality through November and beyond.”
