Today, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act:
“Today, I stand with my colleagues in Congress and with Native communities in celebration of the Supreme Court’s decision to affirm and uphold tribal sovereignty. With this decision, America takes an important step in the ongoing journey to secure the rights and protections for tribal communities who have been unjustly subjected to forced separation. This decision will positively impact generations of Native Americans.
“It is because of the tireless work of indigenous leaders, Native communities, and advocacy groups who worked to keep Native families safe, strong, and supported that indigenous children and families now remain protected under the ICWA. We must continue to elect leaders who fight for families, tribal sovereignty, and the future of all communities.”
