DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement celebrating the Juneteenth holiday:
“On Juneteenth, we commemorate the day that the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston Bay, Texas, freeing 250,000 enslaved people and finally ending slavery in the former Confederate states.
“Black Americans have played an intrinsic role in the ever-growing efforts to make this country more free and equal. House Democrats are acutely aware of the work still ahead of us to honor that history.
“When House Democrats reclaim the majority, we will continue to support Black communities across the country by fighting to create good-paying jobs, build an economy that works for everyone, and lower costs. To fulfill the vision of a government for the people and by the people, we must also protect access to the ballot box by passing legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
“House Democrats will fight to earn every vote between now and Election Day to uplift Black Americans, their history and stories, and defend our democracy for generations to come.”
