On preventing a government shutdown: “We’re ready to be at the table. Republicans don’t even know what they want to do. […] They’re in charge of everything, but they have no leadership because they don’t know what to do unless Donald Trump tells them what to do.”
After a summer of House Republicans getting booed back home for their support of the Big, Ugly Law and American families struggling to keep up with rising prices on nearly everything, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene joined Bloomberg and NBC News to talk how Republicans’ broken promise to lower costs on ‘Day One’ and their disastrous agenda will be a key issue in the midterms.
DelBene also laid out Democrats’ efforts to stand up against Republican attempts to rig the midterms and called out Republicans for driving the country towards a government shutdown.
“What is happening on the ground right now is prices are going up for families across the country. The economy is struggling. Republicans are trying to rip away health care from millions of people. People are concerned on the ground about what this means for their future. Republicans promised to lower costs on day one. They are not doing that. The American people are feeling it.”

We need a Congress that’s gonna stand up for the American people. Folks who are going to fight to lower costs and fight to help working families. That is our number one goal. That is what we hear when we go and actually talk to voters when we’re at home about the needs they have. That’s number one.

“[Republicans] know they can’t win based on policy.”
[…]
“They are not focused on the needs of the American people. If they’re not willing to actually fight for policies which help working families, if that’s not their priority, then they know they’re going to lose. And so instead of actually fighting and listening to their constituents, they’re trying to rig the system. That’s why you saw Donald Trump go to Texas and say, “give me five seats.” This wasn’t the people of Texas asking for this. This was Donald Trump saying it. The people of Texas hate this. They think they should pick the representatives, not have politicians pick their voters.”

“We actually have 14 Democrats right now who represent districts Donald Trump also won in 2024. And why did they win in those districts? Because they are strong voices for their communities. We need three more seats to take back the majority.”
[…]
“We have many people across the country who want to run because they want to stand up for our country and fight against the damage being done by this president and this administration and this congress. They’re ready to stand up for their communities. That’s how we win. And if you look at special elections across the country, Democrats are running 15 points ahead because people are rejecting the Republican agenda.”
“This is about doing the work for the American people, the people you represent. Folks are seeing costs go up dramatically. Affordability is the number one issue across the country: housing, food, health care, child care, energy costs. Folks want relief. In fact, that was the number one issue in the last election. Trump promised to lower costs on day one, that’s a big broken promise from Republicans. Our focus as we look into funding for next year should be on what is the work we’re doing to help working families across the country. And the Big, Ugly Bill that Republicans passed made it even worse.”
[…]
“We’re ready to be at the table. Republicans don’t even know what they want to do.”
[…]
“You can’t even get them to commit that there’s going to be a bipartisan solution here. They’re in charge of everything, but they have no leadership because they don’t know what to do unless Donald Trump tells them what to do.”
[…]
“Republicans broke promises. They’ve raised costs. They are creating damage to our economy. Working families are hurting. Their bill is underwater because it’s slashing health care across the country. That’s what people are seeing, and that’s why you see polling on Republicans and on the president way under water, because people are feeling what’s happening on the ground. They know the damage.”
