DCCC Chairman Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney Statement on sentencing in the trial of Derek Chauvin

“George Floyd should be alive. While our system achieved accountability in finding Derek Chauvin guilty, no sentencing decision will bring back seven-year-old Gianna Floyd’s father, or return the brother, son, and friend that he was to so many.

“Our charge today is to go beyond accountability, to achieve true justice by stamping out systemic racism that exists within our institutions. I am hopeful our nation can take a step toward justice by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. We must do more to support good policing, limit the use of deadly force, increase the use of body cameras, and require accountability for police brutality.

“While we pray for the Floyd family, we can live up to America’s promise by acting to stamp out the scourge of institutional racism and police misconduct that threatens the liberty of all Americans.”
