Representatives David Cicilline, Sean Maloney and Mark Takano will work to foster engagement and support for the DCCC in the LGBT Community
Today, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairwoman Cheri Bustos announced Representatives David Cicilline, Sean Maloney and Mark Takano will serve as co-chairs of the DCCC’s LGBT Equality Council. All three of these Representatives have been long-standing advocates for the LGBT community and have helped lead the charge for a more equal America. The LGBT Equality Council will work to foster and engage with the LGBT community, and lead fundraising efforts for the committee.
This announcement comes following last week’s passage of H.R. 5, the Equality Act, which was sponsored by Congressman Cicilline. The bill was passed with unanimous Democratic support.
“As Democrats, our strength comes from our diversity and that includes standing with LGBT Americans in their fight to ensure equality,” said DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos. “Representatives Cicilline, Maloney and Takano are proven leaders in the LGBT community and I am deeply honored to have their help leading our LGBT Equality Council through the 2020 election.”
“Fairness and equality are core American values. I’m proud to be a member of the only political party that’s fighting to bring our country closer to realizing these ideals in our time. I’m looking forward to working with Representatives Bustos, Takano, and Maloney to elect candidates who share our values,” said Co-Chair Cicilline.
“Right now, there’s a record number of LGBTQ Americans serving in Congress – and that’s something to celebrate. But, it’s clear we’ve got more work to do until The People’s House is truly reflective of the people who voted us into office,” said Co-Chair Maloney. “I’m proud to co-chair the LGBT Equality Council at this historic time in our fight to secure equal protections for LGBTQ people everywhere. We’ve got to keep the momentum going.”
“We are now serving in the most diverse Congress in this nation’s history. This new era includes the LGBT community, and I am proud to be in the fight to secure true equality for all people,” said Co-Chair Takano. “I am excited to join my colleagues Representatives Cicilline and Maloney, to ensure that our Democratic Party is standing up for all of the communities we serve.”
