DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos Statement on 8th Anniversary of the DACA Program

Today marks the 8th anniversary of the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the landmark executive order signed by President Obama in 2012 that has transformed the lives of close to 800,000 law abiding DREAMers. DACA has allowed these hardworking young people to come out of the shadows, live without fear of deportation, and obtain temporary work permits. This anniversary comes at a crucial moment as the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is expected to make a decision on the lawfulness of the DACA program by the end of June.

DCCC Chairwoman, Cheri Bustos issued the following statement:

The DACA program has profoundly transformed our country and the lives of close to 800,000 DREAMers for the better since being signed by President Obama. DREAMers serve in our military, pay their taxes, and play vital roles of our communities.

“From the moment DACA was initiated, Washington Republicans have played politics with the lives of hundreds of thousands of DREAMers who are striving to achieve the American dream.

“As we await the Supreme Court’s decision on the DACA program, we must stand more united in the fight to fix our immigration system. I’m proud that this House majority took the important step of passing legislation to protect DREAMers. It’s time for Senator McConnell to come to the table and get the job done.”
