Today, Maine voters strongly rejected Question 1, a voter initiative that would have made it more difficult for Mainers to exercise their fundamental right to vote, including by dismantling absentee voting. The DCCC, DGA, and DSCC successfully intervened in a lawsuit to defeat misleading ballot language about this initiative. DCCC Executive Director Julie Merz, DGA Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper, and DSCC Executive Director Devan Barber released the following statement on the results:
“Today, Mainers protected their fundamental right to make their voices heard at the ballot box. Mainers saved absentee voting and ensured that the right to vote is protected – including for seniors, those who work multiple jobs, and rural communities. Democrats are proud to have stood with Mainers across the state to fight back against this assault on their freedom, and ensure that elections in Maine continue to be secure, safe, and trustworthy. Tonight’s results will ensure that it is safe and easy for all eligible voters to participate in next year’s gubernatorial, Senate, and Congressional elections.”
