NRCC Chair Tom Emmer has called Donald Trump a “private citizen” when asked about Trump’s influence on the 2022 election and reportedly suggested censuring Trump following January 6. Kevin McCarthy claimed Trump bore responsibility and called for Trump’s resignation following January 6. But now, Kevin McCarthy desperately tries to downplay his statements, the NRCC categorically denies New York Times reporting, and House Republicans hold a joint fundraiser with the person they wanted to oust.
One thing is clear: the GOP is willing to drop to any low, whitewash any statement, and swallow what pride they have left to coddle one man.
DCCC spokesperson Chris Taylor:
“In one moment Republican leadership is trying to distance themselves and calling for Trump’s resignation, and in the next they are buddying up to him for endorsements and fundraising help. While House Democrats fight to deliver real results for the American people, House Republicans are motivated by one thing and one thing only: Trump’s validation.”
