Drug pushed by Mariannette Miller-Meeks “failed in several recent clinical trials and doctors say they can cause serious heart problems.”
Today, the DCCC announced that it’s launching a targeted ad buy in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, which will remind voters of Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ reckless touting of hydroxychloroquine, an unproven drug to treat COVID-19.
Studies show the drug Miller-Meeks touted is ineffective and connected to worsened health outcomes, leading the FDA to withdraw its emergency use authorization last week.
The DCCC’s ad will start running today on YouTube targeting voters across the 2nd Congressional district, ensuring that Miller-Meeks’ Washington-style recklessness is top of mind for Iowans.
“Iowans deserve to know that in the middle of a global pandemic, Mariannette Miller-Meeks recklessly touted a drug that scientific evidence shows caused even more deaths in coronavirus patients. If Miller-Meeks is already putting politics ahead of patients now, how can Iowans trust her to put them ahead of partisan gamesmanship in Washington?” asked DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.

WHBF NEWS ANCHOR: You took to Twitter not long ago and posted that hydroxychloroquine is an effective treatment for the virus. You have since deleted that tweet, but it came to light in a recent study that the drug shows no benefit and actually a higher death rate when given to veterans.
MILLER-MEEKS: I said that if I were to contract COVID-19, then I would want to be placed on the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.
CBS NEWS ANCHOR: The FDA is rescinding the authorization which was originally issued in March saying that the malaria drug carries too many risks without any apparent benefit.
