Today, the DCCC released its first set of TV ads in the race for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District: “Overturn” and “Working Families.”
The first ad, “Overturn,” highlights Derek Merrin’s anti-choice agenda that is a direct threat to women and families in Northwest Ohio.
In the Ohio Statehouse, Merrin “shepherded” the state’s six-week abortion ban, which became law in the wake of the Dobbs decision. He also championed a total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest that could criminalize doctors who perform abortions and women who seek abortion care with life in prison.
While voters in OH-09 overwhelmingly (56%) supported a ballot measure to codify reproductive rights in the state’s constitution, Merrin promised that he “will not give up.”

The second ad, “Working People,” highlights Marcy Kaptur’s relentless effort to lower costs for African American communities in Northwest Ohio and Derek Merrin’s out-of-touch agenda that would hurt working families and threaten seniors’ hard-earned benefits.
On multiple occasions, Merrin tried to cut the number of paid sick days for government employees. As Waterville Mayor, he cut the number of paid sick days from 18 to 10. As a state legislator he sponsored a bill to reduce annual sick leave for school districts and local public employees, arguing that as little as “two days” should be the standard.
Merrin also supports right-to-work legislation that robs Ohio workers of their right to collectively bargain for better pay, drives down wages, and puts power into the hands of companies. Even Merrin’s Republican colleagues thought this bill went too far.

The ads – the first two to run in OH-09 from the DCCC IE – are airing in the Toledo and Cleveland media markets beginning today and are part of the Committee’s first round of TV reservations in key battleground districts.
