With fringe candidate Roy Moore beating establishment choice Senator Luther Strange in tonight’s Alabama primary, DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law issued the following statement:
“In a primary that was fought over who would be the tool of Republican leaders in Washington, Alabama voters spoke out and defeated establishment Republicans. Roy Moore’s victory further clarifies that already imperiled House Republicans will continue to be plagued by vicious primaries, and the Republican establishment is completely helpless to stop it. If it can happen to Leader McConnell in Alabama, it can happen to Speaker Ryan, too.
“We are already seeing far-right ‘punishment primaries’ against Republican incumbents and the growing number of open seats are breeding grounds for pro-Trump proxy fights. With more legislative failures and Republican retirements on the horizon, the situation is certain to get worse for Speaker Ryan.”
