DCCC Chairman Ben Ray Luján issued the following statement on the Commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr:
“Today, we pay tribute and celebrate the extraordinary life of one of America’s greatest citizens, whose life was taken fifty years ago. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life was dedicated to serving others while being committed to fighting for justice and equality for all. We should do more than pause and reflect for this champion for justice.
“We should remember that the dream Dr. King articulated has still not been fully realized. We have more work to do. If we truly want to honor the legacy of Dr. King, we must continue his unfinished work. Through the Resistance, Black Lives Matter, the effort to protect DREAMers and our youth’s commitment to ending gun violence, we’ve seen the rebirth of grassroots organizing and continue to make progress.
“If we are to make Dr. King’s dream a reality, we also must see a renaissance in voter participation. We must ensure the scales of justice work equally for all — considering not only how justice is applied, but also how it is practiced and experienced. In the words of Dr. King, ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,’ and this remains our greatest unfinished business. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — We love you, celebrate you, and honor you.”
