DCCC Statement on the Observance of Juneteenth

Today, as we observe Juneteenth Independence Day, DCCC Director of African American Media and Deputy National Press Secretary Kamau Marshall issued the following statement:

“Out of the harshness of slavery, African Americans have made invaluable contributions to our democracy, shaping this nation’s cultural, scientific, and economic prosperity for generations. We must never forget that in the face of immoral and un-American treatment, slaves made lasting contributions to the betterment of our society by fighting in wars and giving their lives for the liberation of all Americans. Their idealism helped this nation create a more perfect union, even in the midst of their suffering.

“Juneteenth has never been about victory or accepting the way things are. We must always pledge ourselves to building a more just world where every individual receives equal protection under our laws and every American has an equal voice and right to vote.

“As we look ahead, be reminded of what the Black folks of Galveston knew, that the path from bondage to freedom takes sacrifice, takes work, and most of all — it takes time. The fight for freedom does not have an ending point. Even in 2018, racism and discrimination remain deep-rooted challenges for this nation to overcome. So as we celebrate today, let us resolve to end the violence of bigotry, discrimination, and all forms of hatred.”
