DCCC Statement on Darrell Issa Abandoning Re-Election Bid

DCCC spokesperson Anna Elsasser released the following statement after Darrell Issa did not file for re-election, vacating CA-48:

“After over two decades of disastrous representation, Darrell Issa is once again running for the exits – and good riddance. Issa abandoning his voters now is the clearest sign yet that Republicans know he can’t win on his record of skyrocketing prices, gutting health care, and looking out for himself and wealthy special interests above all else. Any Republican who tries to parachute into this race with the same extreme agenda will face the same fate. Voters are fed up with cowardly politicians who treat public office like a game of musical chairs. Southern Californians are ready to flip this seat and elect a real leader who will finally put them first.”

REMINDER: Democrats have consistently overperformed in off-year elections and by an average 17-point margin in congressional special elections. That includes the overwhelming passage of Proposition 50, which was backed by 71% of Latino voters across California. A Fox News poll shows Democrats up 6 points on the general congressional ballot, including 62% of Independents supporting Democrats. So far this cycle, the nonpartisan Cook Political Report has shifted more than 18 House districts in Democrats’ direction – including CA-48.
