DCCC Statement on House Republicans’ Plan to Bring Extreme Budget Cuts to the Floor

Today, after months of holding the U.S. economy hostage, House Republicans are suggesting they will have the votes to pass a bill next week that will raise the debt ceiling but force extreme, out-of-touch cuts. While the public still does not know exactly what will be in the bill (and as Politico reported McCarthy is “muscl[ing] toward vote on debt plan that ‘doesn’t even exist’”), here is a just short list of things House Republicans have considered ripping away from working families:

• Social Security and Medicare;

• Food security programs like SNAP, which both lower income families and seniors depend on for food and heating;

• Education programs;

• FBI funding;

• Inflation Reduction Act funding which is lowering energy prices, prescription drug prices, and creating jobs;

• Programs that are helping boost record job growth and record low unemployment; and much more.

Reminder: These proposed cuts are extremely unpopular.

Any vulnerable Republican who supports this move, after holding the full faith and credit of the United States hostage, will be held accountable.”
