DCCC spokesperson Katie Smith released the following statement in response to JD Vance visiting Howell in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District to lie about Republicans’ Big, Ugly Law and their reckless tariffs:
“JD Vance is parachuting in to lie to Michiganders about Tom Barrett’s toxic agenda, because Barrett can’t defend giving tax breaks to billionaires and backing reckless tariffs at Michigan families’ expense. Thanks to Barrett and Vance, Michiganders are losing their health care, facing layoffs at their manufacturing jobs, and paying higher prices everywhere from the grocery store to their electricity bills. Michiganders won’t be fooled: Barrett puts Washington first and his constituents last, and it’s why he’ll be rejected at the ballot box next year.”
Reminder of the toxic, cost-raising agenda Tom Barrett must defend:
- Ripping health care away from nearly 25,000 Michiganders so he could give tax cuts to billionaires.
- Raising health care costs for 23,000 Michiganders who depend on ACA tax credits he refused to extend – and who will be forced to pay 61% more in premium costs or lose their health care.
- Jacking up electricity prices by voting to end energy tax credits.
- Repeatedly backing reckless tariffs that are hurting Michigan’s manufacturers, farmers, and auto industry, and forcing families to pay higher prices:
- Barrett-backed tariffs could increase American factory costs by as much as 4.5% and threaten Michigan manufacturing jobs.
- Ford faces a “$2 billion tariff hit” thanks to Barrett-backed tariffs.
- Barret-backed tariffs are threatening Michigan’s agriculture industry, hurting farmers, and raising prices.
- Barrett-backed tariffs are expected to slash UAW profit-sharing checks by thousands of dollars. Some Stellantis workers are at risk of receiving no bonus for the first time in nearly two decades.
- Barrett-backed tariffs have “significantly increased” HVAC costs for Lansing families by an average of $1,500.
- Lansing businesses leaders are “worried about where they stand” and their continued operations as “customers are already starting to notice bigger price tags” due to Barrett-backed tariffs.
- And Michigan is one of the hardest-hit states by Barrett-backed tariffs – behind only California and Texas.
