Tonight, New York Republican Mike Lawler – who is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in the country – unsurprisingly and inevitably owned up to supporting Donald Trump as the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee for president in 2024, after spending months avoiding the question.
The admission comes just days after the four-time indicted former president bragged about overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to implement draconian abortion bans, a position Lawler said he agreed with. Lawler has also dismissed the former president’s incitement of violence and antisemitism in addition to fearmongering on border security instead of actually putting forth bipartisan solutions.
The news also coincided with a recent report from LoHud exposing Mike Lawler’s record of working to elect Trump in both 2016 and 2020. As a career Republican operative, Lawler served as a delegate for Trump and led a multimillion dollar Trump-aligned direct mail effort through his consulting company, Checkmate Strategies.
In response, DCCC spokesperson Ellie Dougherty released the following statement:
“Mike Lawler owning up to supporting Donald Trump comes as no surprise. Just like he did in 2016 and 2020, Lawler is propping up Trump’s dangerous agenda. New York’s 17th District will reject Mike Lawler’s partisanship and extremism in November.”
