DCCC Statement on North District Court of Alabama Ruling to Uphold Congressional Map

DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene released the following statement after a three-judge panel in the Northern District of Alabama struck down Alabama’s 2023 Congressional map as a violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Today’s decision means that the current court-drawn map with two districts in which Black Alabamians have the opportunity to elect their candidates of choice remains in place.

“Today’s ruling is proof positive that our nation’s ideal of affording every individual the right to self-determine who represents them is protected. It’s also a monumental win for the people of Alabama. The court’s decision ensures the voices of Black Alabamian voters will be heard and represented in the people’s House today and for the rest of the decade. It is another victory in the larger fight against unfair and discriminatory maps – maps that marginalize the voice and power of communities of color.

“The DCCC will continue to work everyday to ensure free and fair maps for all to achieve a House of Representatives that better reflects the full diversity of our nation, ensuring all citizens are represented equally.”
