Yesterday, 2022 congressional candidate Chris Mathys officially filed his paperwork to challenge David Valadao in the primary for California’s 22nd Congressional District. Mathys, who came within 1,220 votes of ousting Valadao in 2022, is coming back with a vengeance to challenge the vulnerable incumbent.
In response, DCCC spokesperson Dan Gottlieb released the following statement:
“Vulnerable Republican David Valadao is in for the challenge of his career – facing a rematch against a MAGA Republican with Donald Trump simultaneously on the primary ballot. Valadao thought that enabling the far-right fringes of his party in Congress would be enough, but turns out his pandering didn’t do the trick. Valadao will have to answer for his out-of-step votes, and we’ll be holding him accountable every step of the way.”
As a reminder:
-
Chris Mathys, a MAGA Republican challenging Valadao due to his vote to impeach Donald Trump, re-enters the race after coming 1,220 votes short of knocking Valadao out of the 2022 contest. That was without Trump on the ticket – now, the former president will appear on the primary ballot on the same day.
-
In a presidential cycle, vulnerable incumbent Republican David Valadao will already be forced to defend a district where Democrats hold a 17% registration advantage over Republicans and President Biden won by 12%.
-
Valadao voted for devastating cuts to critical services included in MAGA Republicans’ failed Friday C.R. and previously cosponsored legislation to ban abortion without exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother.
